Welding Wire Machinery: From Wire Rod to Finished Spool

Timer Yellow
5 min

Welding wire leaves very little room for error. If the diameter varies, the copper coating is patchy, or the wire is badly layered on the spool, the welder will notice it as feeding problems at the torch. Robotic welding cells are even less forgiving. A welding wire is only as good as the welding wire machinery that drew, coated and wound it.

Lämneå Bruk has built welding wire machinery for every one of those steps for decades. We were founded in 1727 as an ironworks in Ljusfallshammar, Sweden, and have built wire machinery since 1823. Today the Hagstedt family runs the company in its ninth generation, and our machines run in 98 countries. As a wire machinery manufacturer, we design, develop and build every part in-house, from single machines to complete welding wire lines and entire new plants.

Welding wire machinery for the complete process

We divide welding wire production into four stages, and we build machines for each one:

  • Pre-draw  line: Payoff, descaling, cleaning and coating to prepare the rod for drawing
  • Drawing:  Wire drawing machines that bring the wire to its final diameter
  • Final line: Copper coating, skin pass and spooling for MIG/MAG wire
  • Rewinding and packaging: Precision layer winding, coiling and palletising of the finished product

We also supply dedicated lines for submerged arc welding (SAW) wire and flux-cored wire lines. Because every stage comes from the same manufacturer, the machines are built to work together into complete welding wire solutions, and you have a single contact person for the whole line.

Pre-draw: a clean rod makes a better wire

Drawing quality depends on how well the rod is prepared. Our vertical payoff takes rod from 5.5 to 12 mm and coils of up to 5 tons (2 × 2.5 t). The integrated snarl protection keeps the line running steadily.

Our reversed bending descalers remove mill scale mechanically at up to 4 m/s. A sandpaper machine then cleans the surface further. Finally, the cleaning and lubricant coating machine removes any remaining scale with hot water and applies the lubricant carrier that dry drawing needs. See our rod preparation equipment.‍

Wire drawing machines built for speed and flexibility

Our Wire Drawing Loop Line is configured to match your product range, with:

  • 2 to 21 blocks, with block diameters from 200 to 1,200 mm
  • Tungsten carbide coated blocks with specially shaped V-grooves for better cooling
  • Line speeds of up to 50 m/s and inlet wire diameters from 1 to 15 mm
  • Start, bypass and finish on any block, so one machine can produce several finished sizes

Operators can choose which blocks to use for each product, so you can change the size range without rebuilding the line. We supply control systems from Siemens, Mitsubishi or Allen-Bradley to match your plant standard.

Rewinding lines: Precision where the welder notices it

How welding wire is wound matters as much as the wire itself. Precise layer winding helps the wire pay off smoothly in the feeder, without kinks or tangles. Our rewinding lines cover every common welding wire package:

  • Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winders (FA-PLW 100, 200 and 300) for MIG/MAG wire from Ø0.8 to 1.6 mm, at speeds of up to 35 m/s, on D100, D200, D300 and BS300 spools
  • FA-PLW  450 for SAW wire from Ø2.0 to 4.8 mm on BS435/450 and D435/450 spools
  • Semi-automatic versions (SA-PLW 100 to 760) for plants that need more flexibility in spool types, including wire baskets and fibre spools
  • No Twist Coilers 750 and 1200 for drum packs of up to Ø1,200 mm, with MIG/MAG wire at up to 40 m/s

We have built No Twist Coilers since 1992. Because the wire comes out of the drum free of twist, no extra straightener is required.

Fully automatic applications for continuous production

Every manual spool change means a stop and a risk of operator error. Our fully automatic applications are designed to take both out of the process. The FA-PLW winders change spools automatically. A palletiser with label applicator can serve up to four FA-PLW 300 or 450 machines, so full spools are stacked and labelled without anyone handling them.

Customised machine solutions instead of standard models

No two wire plants are the same. Wire grades, spool formats, floor space, line speeds and existing equipment all vary. That's why every project starts with your product and production targets, not with a catalogue model. We currently build 123 machine types, and we adapt each one to the line it will join, whether that's a modified inlet height, a different spool formator a complete plant layout.

Custom wire machinery solutions like these come from close work with the people who run the machines every day. That's also where our most innovative wire machinery has started.

‍A full-service supplier with wire industry expertise

As a full-service supplier, we support you from the first layout drawing until long after start-up:

  • Line design based on your wire specifications and target output
  • Installation and commissioning at your site
  • Remote troubleshooting by our own technicians, with on-site support when needed
  • Spare parts and after-sales service

Our wire industry expertise covers welding, stainless and high- and low-carbon wire, and we bring it into every project, whether you are adding one rewinding line or planning a complete new welding wire plant.

Frequently asked questions about welding wire machinery

Can you supply a complete welding wire plant?

Yes. We build machines for every stage, from rod preparation (payoff, descaling, cleaning and lubricant coating) through wire drawing, copper coating and skin pass, to spooling, precision layer winding and palletising. You can buy single machines to expand an existing line, complete production cells, or a full new plant planned from the floor layout up, with one supplier responsible for how the machines work together.

Can the same supplier provide machines for MIG/MAG and SAW wire?

‍Yes. Our rewinding and coiling machines cover MIG/MAG wire from Ø0.8 to 1.6 mm and SAW wire from Ø2.0 to 4.8 mm, in carbon, stainless and flux-cored versions.

‍What is the difference between fully automatic and semi-automatic precision layer winders?

‍Fully automatic precision layer winders (FA-PLW) change spools automatically, so the line keeps running while full spools are swapped for empty ones. With a palletiser and label applicator, one palletiser can serve up to four FA-PLW 300or 450 machines. Semi-automatic winders (SA-PLW) need an operator for the spool change, but they accept a wider range of spool types, including Ø760 mm spools on the SA-PLW 760.

Why does twist-free wire matter for welding?

‍Wire with residual twist can spiral as it leaves the drum, which disturbs feeding in automated welding cells. Our no twist coilers reverse the pre-twist during coiling, so the wire leaves the drum straight and needs no extra straightener. Drums of up to 2,500 kg can be linked end to end for a non-stop payout from one drum to the next.

Can your machines be added to an existing production line?

‍Yes. We adapt each machine to the line it will join, for example the inlet wire height, the spool format or the control system. We supply controls from Siemens, Mitsubishi or Allen-Bradley, so new machines can run on the same automation standard as your existing equipment.

‍What support do you offer after installation?

‍Our own technicians handle installation and commissioning at your site. After start-up, they provide remote troubleshooting by phone or online, and come onsite when a problem needs hands-on work. We also supply spare parts for our machines.
